What is Edinburgh university savoy opera group?
Edinburgh University Savoy Opera Group (EUSOG), affectionately known as 'Savoy', is the oldest musical theatre society at the University, being formed in 1961 at the point where copyright over performance of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas had expired, fifty years after the death of W.S. Gilbert. While this opened the door for creative student teams to develop innovative new approaches to the well loved operas, the Group has never rested on its laurels. In the 1980s it expanded its repertoire to include non-G&S shows, and in 1993 performed for the first time in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Today EUSOG produces three shows every year, including a G&S show, a musical and a Fringe production, and continues to foster creative opportunities and the formation of a strong theatrical community for students and non-students in Edinburgh.
What is this archive?
The archive contains memories of productions from the Group's history. These include cast lists, photos, graphics, programmes and programme art, reviews, audio recordings and other media. At the moment it only holds information from 1989 - 1998 but will expand if former Savoyards share materials covering other years.
The archive can be expanded over time by including further file types , non-show materials (such as committee papers, constitutions, photos of social events, etc) and commenting functions. Let us know what features you would enjoy (and then come and volunteer to help maintain the site...!)
